Eatsburgh Episode 1: Girasole "Girasole is the word for 'sunflower' in Italian, and is the family surname. Like the sunflower, Girasole traverses time, blending the old with the new."  In Episode 1, Eatsburgh introduces you to a family-owned Italian restaurant located in Shadyside, Pittsburgh. Walking into the small building almost hidden from the side street, we entered a lively, vibrant and packed space, and there, we met its welcoming owner, Jimmy Girasole.  The Girasole family opened the restaurant in 2000. Inspired by his beloved daughter, the father bought the building, created the menu and wishing to bring the most authentic Italian food to the Pittsburgh community.  The food offered were also the family's favorite dishes, not from just one area, but a fusion of Northern and Southern Italian styles.   Confluence Ep. 2: Music Culture in Pittsburgh Producers: Cindy Chen, Crystal Hu, Emily Chuang, Miguel Martinez Pittsburgh is the birthplace of American Music, and the development center of other musical genres, such as jazz, rock, blues, and many more.  Also, many award winning hall of fame musicians are borned here as well, for example, the father of Pop Music Stephen Foster. As I mentioned before, Jazz has developed and promoted in Pittsburgh, and specifically, in the Hill District. The Hill District is a grouping of historically African American neighborhoods. This culture center was once the Jazz learning place for Earl Hines, Roy Eldridge, Kenny Clark, Ray Brown, etc.. Another music genre that thrived in Pittsburgh was rock. Esquire Magazine proclaimed Pittsburgh "The Number 1 City That Rocks", since well known people like Bret Michaels, Trent Reznor, and Tommy James are all from Pittsburgh. Located in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kiin has a vibrant atmosphere with the walls of the restaurant covered in multicolor murals with imagery relating to Lao and Thai culture. We interviewed Kiin's chef, Nor Nareedokmai Food at Kiin:  During a trip to Laos, Nor learned about Lao cooking and noticed striking similarities between Lao and Thai cuisine. Nor's trip inspired him to become involved with the Lao Food Movement in Pittsburgh, to educate the community about Lao food and culture. Beyond the food, the restaurant offers a rich history and a fascinating story behind its founding. To learn more about the story of both the restaurant and its owners, we talked to the owners of La Palapa, Oscar and Jesus. Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on August 18th, 1934. Clemente had a modest upbringing, balancing helping on the plantation with his sports ambitions. He excelled at high jump and javelin throw in high school, sparking discussion that he could be an Olympic hopeful. His true passion remained baseball, however. At age 17, Clemente began playing for Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rican Baseball League, where he was soon spotted by Dodgers’ scout Al Campanis. After being courted by multiple teams, Clemente signed with the Dodgers and played for their Triple-A team The Montreal Royals for the 1954 season. We received a variety of answers spanning all parts of the greater city of Pittsburgh and decided to give one of them a try. We visited Dobra Tea, located in Squirrel Hill. An ever growing neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill consists of a predominantly white and asian population and a large Jewish community. We can see the melting pot of cultures come to life in Dobra Tea, a cafe or self proclaimed “tea room” for people from all parts of the world.
